Recycling Spin Discs with LaMotte: Protecting Water Quality and the Planet

27, Apr 2025

At LaMotte Pacific, our commitment goes far beyond delivering industry-leading water testing solutions. We’re here for the bigger picture — protecting not just your water systems, but your health, your infrastructure, and our shared environment.

That’s why we’re proud to support a recycling program that gives our reagent Spin Discs a meaningful second life.

Wait — What Are Spin Discs?

If you’ve used our Spin Discs before, you already know how game-changing they are for water testing. Fast, clean, and accurate, they help deliver precise results in just 60 seconds. But here’s the deal: they’re designed to be single-use, much like photographic film. Once they’ve reacted with a water sample, they can’t be reused — but that doesn’t mean they have to go to waste.

After the small amount of test water inside evaporates, the disc is dry, safe, and ready for recycling. The good news? The materials used in the discs are non-hazardous, which means the process is a lot more straightforward than you might expect.

Can I Recycle Spin Discs at Home?

Possibly! In some areas, Spin Discs can be placed directly into your household recycling bin. The disc casing is made of Type 6 hard polystyrene, and each one also contains a small stainless-steel mixing bead.

However, local recycling capabilities vary — and not all councils accept these materials through curbside collection. So, we always recommend checking with your local recycling provider before tossing them in the bin.

If your area doesn’t accept them — no worries. We’ve got a solution.

Partnering for a Greener Future: LaMotte x YCA Recycling

To make recycling Spin Discs easier and more effective, we’ve partnered with YCA Recycling in South Australia — a forward-thinking company that specialises in giving new life to tricky-to-recycle materials.

Here’s how it works:

  • The stainless-steel beads are removed and processed separately.
  • The remaining plastic components are crushed and repurposed into raw materials.
  • These materials are then used in products like concrete aggregates, helping build road infrastructure and other essential developments.

So yes — your used Spin Discs can help pave actual roads!

How to Participate in the Recycling Program

Joining the movement is simple. Here’s how to get involved:

  1. Collect your used Spin Discs.
Make sure they’re dry — this happens naturally as the residual water evaporates post-use.
  2. Double-bag the discs.
This helps prevent any potential leakage or contamination during transport.
  3. Pack them in a sturdy box for added protection.
  4. Ship your package to one of the following addresses:

LaMotte Pacific

Unit 1/6 Bonz Place

Seven Hills NSW 2147

YCA Recycling

16-20 Johansson Road

Wingfield SA 5013

Just a heads-up: Shipping costs are the responsibility of the sender.
